Thinking about hiring a contractor?
If you are thinking about hiring a contractor, there are
some things you might consider:
- Do you require a contractor or can the job be
accomplished by a craftsman specializing in a certain field? For instance,
if you wanted a sink replaced in a kitchen or bathroom you might think
about calling a plumber. On the other hand, if you wanted the entire
bathroom remodeled you might call a contractor. (J.J. Construction
specializes in remodeling!)
- Do you have a definite idea of what you want done?
Defining exactly what you want will help the contractor understand what it
is you need. The more detailed you can be the better the understanding
will be between you and your contractor. (J.J. Construction will
provide you with suggestions and solutions to your construction needs.)
- Are you willing to spend money to get a bid? Most
contractors require plans drawn by an architect or draftsman. Some
contractors will even charge you for a bid. (J.J. Construction may
require plans for bidding purposes depending on the project. They can
also recommend sources for drafting the plans. They do not charge for most
general bids.)

Don't know where to start?
When you have decided on a project and made the decision
to look for a contractor just where do you begin?
- RESEARCH!!! Start your research of contractors by
asking friends and neighbors if they have had work done by contractors.
Find out if they were happy with the contractor and the job they did. If
this does not give you any results then it's time to start looking
elsewhere. There are various sources that you may use: the Yellow Pages of
your phone book, the internet, the
State Contractors Board (they have
valuable consumer information too),
etc. Gather as much information as you can on each of the contractors you
are considering. It is best to get at least 5 or 6 contractors to consider
in the research process so you can pick the top 3 or 4 to bid your
project.
- ALL CONTRACTORS YOU CONSIDER SHOULD BE LICENSED IN THE
STATE OF NEVADA!! Beware of the contractor that is not licensed! There are
too many stories of people being fooled by non-licensed contractors. Be
sure to get the license number of all contractors you are considering.
With this information you can access the
State Contractors Board and find
out valuable information about the contractors. Search each contractor's
license on the State Contractors
Board's website to see their company information. You can also call
the State Contractors Board and
inquire to any complaints and disciplinary actions against the contractor.
(J.J. construction is fully licensed in the State of Nevada with no
complaints or disciplinary actions against them.)
- Also check with the
Better Business Bureau. On their site you can check out a company to
see if there have been complaints filed against them.

What questions do you ask?
By now you should have a good idea of the
contractors you will pursue. What questions do you ask?

What do you look for in a
contractor?
-
Besides what we have learned from the
questions above, find a contractor that you can work with. You should have
a good dialogue with your contractor to eliminate any problems that might
arise from miscommunication. (J.J. Construction will include you in
all phases of your project. They are known for their willingness to please
their customers.)
-
Be careful of the "low bidder". When you
get bids from the contractors you have selected, study them carefully.
Just because a contractor has the lowest bid does not mean you will get
the same results that you would from a contractor with a higher bid. Make
sure you are comparing "apples to apples" when it comes to quality of
materials and workmanship involved. (J.J. Construction may not be the
lowest bidder, but their competitive bid will reflect the high quality of workmanship
and materials they provide.)
